Machteld Cambridge
With her powerful but mellow voice she knows exactly how to
hold the attention of an audience. She has a fascinating charisma and an
incredible varied timbre in her voice. At the same time her performances are
like a journey through time, a living illustration of the history of jazz
vocals throughout the first half of the 20th century. All sorts of different
styles are represented here: of course neither deeply religious spirituals
nor lively gospels are missing, nor are slow blues melodies and ballads,
swinging jazz standards or Caribbean sounds reminiscent of their carnival
festivities. In short: Machteld Cambridge is a welcome complement to the
already wide range of music offered by the Aces of Syncopation.

he has toured with many international jazz stars such as Clark Terry, Peanuts Hucko, Earl
Warren, Doc Cheatham, Warren Vach , Humphrey Lyttleton and Scott Hamilton.
Mike is also a well-known jazz music teacher. As such, he has been in charge of the jazz workshops in Lenk, Switzerland, since the very beginning, in 1994. The workshop is held during the annual jazz festival, in this picturesque Swiss village. |

Arend Huisman
Arend has been playing the trombone since he was twelve. As he had always wanted to become
a professional musician he enrolled as a student at the Conservatory of Music in Groningen
and in Hilversum. He completed his studies under Bart van Lier. Arend is very much in
demand as a guest soloist, who is at home in several quite different styles of music: big
band, traditional jazz, swing, bebob and pop. In addition, he lectures in music and
conducts big bands. He is a regular guest with the Aces of Syncopation and can be heard on
their CD, In the shade of the old apple tree.

Olivier Franc
Olivier Franc, the French "maestro" on the soprano saxophone, is a welcome guest with the
Aces of Syncopation. The connection between them, of course, is the richly facetted music
of Sidney Bechet. In France Olivier is considered to be the only true successor of Sidney
Bechet, and has been awarded the Prix Sidney Bechet de l'Académie du jazz.
Olivier is René Franc's son. René was also an outstanding clarinettist who
played in the style of Bechet and shared the stage with Bechet himself on countless
occassions. Could the influence of Bechet be hereditary?

Dick Sleeman (†)
On Monday July 26th 2010 Dick Sleeman passed away. Dick is renowned as Europe's number one classical and mainstream
jazz trombonist. His jubilant style is reminiscent of jazz greats such as Carl Fontana and Abe Lincoln. In addition to the
trombone, Dick also excelled in playing the euphonium (his first love) and the flugelhorn. Dick has played with many of the
best known bands in the Dutch trad. jazz scene, for example: The Dixieland Pipers, The Dutch Swing College Band,
The Down Town Jazzband, The Four City Seven, The Harbour Jazzband, The Rivival Jazzband, Bob van Oven's (†) Black and
Blue Masters and The Aces Of Syncopation. Besides, one could hear Dick every Sunday morning playing the organ in church.
