 Verburgt's Meeting Place (verburgt.info, 1998-2011)

comments:  Hi, I am Joris Verbeurgt. Since the 19th century, our name is written with -eug-, but in earlier times, it was written Verburgt, Verburcht or Verburght. Originally, it was Van Der Burcht, because that's the name of our eldest known ancestor, Egidius, who was born around 1575. My family always lived in Sout-East Flanders in the region of Audenaerde (Schorisse, Ename, Welden). However, the name is very rare in that part of the ancient Netherlands. The name is more common in the northern Netherlands, and there are very good reasons to believe that Egidius Van Der Burcht (or his unknown father or grandfather) originally came from the northern Netherlands, probably during the religious wars that waged in the region of Audenaerde in the 16th century. You can find out more on this issue (in Dutch) on the website www.geneanet.org of my friend Mon, who did all the research. If anybody can help us with the origins of my family, please feel free to contact me.
